I like its line, I like the definition of its shape, I like its perfect curve. I like Georges Goursat, the great artist known as Sem, whose illustrations – spanning from 1900 to 1930 – cannot be rivalled. In my home, his charcoal drawings – gleaned from auction rooms and bookshops – adorn the walls and fill box after box.

In my home, his charcoal drawings – gleaned from auction rooms and bookshops – adorn the walls and fill box after box.

On one particular day, whilst browsing at the stall of a Parisian bookseller, near Notre-Dame cathedral, I made a fascinating find. In my hands I held a copy of L’Illustration from January 1918. It opened, uncannily, to reveal images of elegant young women in high heels: they had slender waistlines and curvaceous calves.

Upon reading the accompanying article, alas, I understood the dictates of the world of fashion and the serious physical effects it can cause. Has nothing changed in the course of the last 100 years? Judge for yourself…
